Ear Boring

Ear Boring
Natwin in the Burmese (Myanmar) language, a rite of passage for a young girl in which her ear lobe is pierced with a (golden) needle; it usually takes place at the same time as the shinbyu ceremony for her brother, cousin, or other male relative. Unlike shinbyu, it has no formal connection with Buddhism, and the ceremony earns no merit (kutho) for sponsors, but the girl, like her brother, is dressed in royal regalia.
